What is an EMDR Intensive?
Curious about the intensives you keep hearing about in the therapy world? Intensives continue to become more prominent in therapy treatment, especially EMDR intensives. So, here’s why an EMDR intensive may be exactly what you’re looking for and why I have thoughtfully chosen for intensives to play a meaningful role in the therapy space— here at Soulglow Wellness L.L.C.
Intensives provide the container that may be needed for fuller healing and often meaningful lasting change. At it’s core EMDR intensives are accelerated therapy via extended sessions over a shorter period of time. This model let’s us get outside of the standard 50 minute weekly session box — that for some can feel choppy and fragmented. Where an intensive allows for uninterrupted time, providing the space your nervous system may need to move through the deeper roots of the work.
Key Takeaway [What is an EMDR intensive? An EMDR intensive is accelerated therapy via extended sessions over a shorter period of time- often offered as a package.] While an intensive is an investment many people find that it saves them time and money in the longterm and find the benefits to exceed the cost.
Intensives do not focus on rushing. Instead, we use the space as a tool to step into the roots of what truly keeps you feeling stuck while still connecting to nervous system regulation and resourcing along the way—this lets us move like a pendulum to meet your nervous system where it’s at through the entirety of your intensive.
At Soulglow Wellness L.L.C., EMDR intensives are designed to fit you and to provide a fuller approach to trauma treatment.
Why consider an intensive?
Weekly therapy still holds meaning and many find it to be absolutely valuable in their mental health treatment. And sometimes trauma work benefits from another approach. A landscape with a different rhythm— one that syncs margin and wholeness. Intensives let us forgo the start and stop feeling of ongoing weekly sessions, or surfacing the same material if the 50 minute session system doesn’t support what you need. Or maybe you’ve never done EMDR before and the intensives approach aligns with what you value in your care.
A Three Day intensive (15 total intensive hours) —my intensive format— gives the container for the mind and body to unfold, settle in, and be present. This allows for harmony between what you’re holding and what can unfold in the space. There’s not the interruption of logging on for a session during your lunch break, or ongoing child care needs in order to show up for session. Basically, we create this beautiful curated bubble— that often permits the mind and body to say —ahhhhh okay —we can be here in this block of time that is completely designed for me. Shocker, our nervous system not only typically loves that, it also may need it.
What do intensives include?
Many EMDR intensive are established as a package. Often your package includes some sort of pre-assessment to ensure an intensive is a good fit, preparation hours and resources- to help provide tools and supports, your intensive hours, and usually some sort of follow up.
At Soulglow Wellness L.L.C my intensive package includes
A 20 minute consultation call to help assess for readiness.
A 90 minute assessment and preparation session that incorporates exploring clinical history, identifying therapeutic goals, creating your individualized treatment plan, and begin building your EMDR tools and resources.
An EMDR intensives workbook that you complete prior to the first intensive day. The workbook includes additional tools and preparation that helps to define your individualized intensive and provide support for between and after sessions.
The 3 Day intensive— 15 total hours— 5 hours each day
Follow up and integration— I provide a 30 minute follow up session that allows us to checkin, provide continuity, and decide best next steps for your treatment. Some folks prefer to return to weekly therapy for integrative care, others may want to schedule a customized intensive in a few weeks or months— and others may decide they only needed that single intensive.
All in all, EMDR intensive give us a different option to the treatment of trauma and the things in life that feel big or messy that we just can’t shake. One thing I love about intensives is it provides another pathway outside of the standard approach. Given that one of my biggest values is the power of choice and having autonomy over our care and lives— this checks out.
