Nervous System Regulation and the Window of Tolerance
Nervous system regulation is all about meeting your mind and body where they are instead of fighting against them—or trying to fit everything into another breathing exercise.
Don't get me wrong: sometimes a slow breath in and out is all that's needed to recenter. But let's be honest—have you ever used a coping skill, maybe one you learned from a therapist, a friend, or one that's usually your go-to when you feel overwhelmed, and had it not work? Or maybe it even made things worse?
It's possible that the problem isn't the tool—or you. There may simply be a mismatch between the tool you're using and what your nervous system needs in that moment.
Here's what we know:
Our minds and bodies are nuanced. This is why one-size-fits-all approaches often don't work.
Our nervous systems operate within a window of tolerance, which helps us understand our capacity and how to work with our nervous system rather than against it.
Different tools and approaches work best depending on where you are within your window of tolerance and on your unique mind and body. Individuality is crucial.
What this most likely means is that not every tool will work in every situation. The bright side is that you can begin to meet your inner world by learning the language of your own nervous system.
From there, we can get curious about what a feeling, thought, or behavior may be communicating. We can ask:
What is its function?
What does this part of me need?
Take a moment and notice how you cope with different feelings and stressors. Maybe you like to get outside or call a friend. Deep breathing might truly be your thing. Perhaps you use music to create space for your emotions and channel expression.
You can begin asking yourself: When do I notice feeling even 10% better?
I say this because a coping skill isn't meant to make emotions disappear or make us feel happy all the time. Rather, it serves as an anchor—something that helps our mind and body create a little more openness toward what we're experiencing. It allows us to observe, get curious, and make space for what's there. From that place, we can begin to make shifts.
What is the Window of Tolerance?
The concept of the Window of Tolerance was developed by psychiatrist Dr. Dan Siegel.
It's a metaphorical window that helps us understand how our nervous system works, how it responds to stress, and how we can widen our capacity in ways that feel supportive of our needs, values, and overall well-being.
The goal is not to be regulated 24/7. The goal is to develop a flexible nervous system—one that can move into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses when needed and then return to a more balanced state.
The Window of Tolerance helps us recognize our capacity before we begin to feel overwhelmed or pushed beyond our limits. When you're within your window, you can still experience a wide range of emotions without feeling completely consumed by them. You can notice what you're feeling and respond rather than react.
When life stressors push our nervous system into overdrive, we may move outside of our window and into states of hyperarousal or hypoarousal. Understanding the Window of Tolerance provides a helpful starting point and a snapshot of how our nervous system operates.
At the same time, I believe we are far more complex and nuanced than any chart could ever capture. Yet getting to know your own personal Window of Tolerance can foster growth, deepen self-understanding, and support greater attunement to your needs.

The more we listen to our nervous system, the more we can respond to ourselves with compassion and care.
